“The Ladder was not the first American lesbian magazine. That distinction belongs to a newsletter produced in 1947 in Los Angeles by a young aspiring writer named Lisa Ben (a pseudonym she created from "lesbian").”

“Ben... was introduced to the homosexual social scene there by a friend who asked her if she was gay. According to a 2002 interview, Ben "thought she was being asked if she was happy." Her positive response led her friend to include her in an evening spent at a local club, "where Lisa noticed that the men and women were in separate areas." She discovered the alternate meaning of "gay" as well as her own attraction to other women.”
